It’s amazing where life can take you. Over the last few years, my work and personal life have been merging in the best possible way. Growing up watching 50s-60s Italian films filled with sharp suits, style, and love, I couldn’t help but be drawn to it all. Italy’s always been on my radar – my father was one of the first in his area to import a Lambretta, and he fully embraced the Italian look, complete with a suit and winklepicker shoes.
Naturally, Italy became a part of my life early on. I’ve always loved travelling there; for me and my family, it’s the perfect holiday. Whether it’s spending summers in Ca’Savio or by Lake Garda, or city breaks, Italy quickly feels like home.
As the kids grew up, I noticed it wasn’t just me who relaxed—our whole family did. Family is central to Italian life, and we’ve always been welcomed as more than just tourists, treated like guests in their home. That sense of being embraced truly lets you immerse yourself in the country. You start slowing down, appreciating the finer details of life.
In Italy, everything is done with passion, expertise, and pride. Whether you’re making a morning espresso or creating a masterpiece, Italians pour their heart into it. That’s what I love most. From the moment you step off the plane, all five senses are hit with a barrage of experiences. The smell of coffee, the taste of the food, the sound of lively conversations, stunning architecture around every corner, and the feel of real history – it’s a sensory overload like no other.
Food and Opera – The True Italian Experience
People often rave about French cuisine, but for me, Italy is unmatched. I always do my research, choosing small family-run restaurants rather than the typical holiday spots. These are the places where locals gather for celebrations or just to catch up with friends, and the food is always phenomenal. My Italian may not be great, but the international language of pointing at dishes and chatting with the locals makes every meal a memorable one.
Then there’s opera. Verona offers an unparalleled experience – it starts at sunset in a real Roman amphitheatre. Sitting on ancient stone steps, listening to timeless art unfold before you, and then dining in nearby bars until the early hours… it’s pure magic. For me, it’s the perfect blend of history, art, food, and culture.
From Holidays to Work: Engineering, Recruitment & Supercars
Three years ago, my professional life took a turn that brought everything full circle. I work in engineering recruitment, specialising in automotive R&D, and was given the opportunity to collaborate with what I believe is “the greatest car company in the world” – in Italy, no less! For someone in my field, this is like winning the World Cup and the Nobel Peace Prize in one go.
Working with this prestigious company brings a rush of pride. You can’t help but embrace the passion and determination that drives everyone involved. It’s all about delivering excellence – something deeply rooted in Italy’s culture and history. I now feel like an adopted Italian, working alongside a team that lives and breathes La Dolce Vita.
When I’m in Italy, I fully immerse myself in the lifestyle. During my annual trips to Monte Carlo for the tennis, I always hop on a train to Ventimiglia to stock up on local delicacies like cheese and ham. Work trips to Maranello involve a mad dash to Modena’s market. This year, I’m embarking on a road trip from Rome to Palermo via Napoli – my inner Italian has truly become my outer Italian!
Engineering Italy’s Future
Every year, I visit our partners to discuss their recruitment needs in detail, including upcoming projects and engineering roadmaps. This year, I’m heading to Italy again to discuss the future of supercar engineering, and I couldn’t be more excited.
This year marks a revolution in engineering, with a focus on future platforms in:
- Hybrid/EV technologies
- Battery, Electronics & Electric Machines
- V8/V12 Engines, 1D Simulation, and Gear Transmission Design
- Spaceframe Body Design, Composite, and Simulation/FEM
- Chassis, Braking, Steering, and Aerodynamics
- ADAS & Active Automotive Safety
We’re keen to connect with Italians who, like me, miss the unique combination of food, family, lifestyle, and challenge. If you’re considering a return to Italy and want to make your mark on the next chapter of supercar history, it’s time to start the conversation.
For me, recruitment and life have become inseparable – both are truly living La Dolce Vita. Grazie Mille & Ciao for now!
